We Are the Salt of the Earth

One blessed Sabbath afternoon, our Adventist Youth Fellowship activity encouraged us to read Matthew 5:13 and Mark 9:50. Here are the lessons we got from digging.

salt

Let’s break it down

The youth leader instructed us to separate by groups. Fortunately, I am with the same group with my wife and her family. We are close already and we had a good discussion about the topic. Together, we listened to everybody’s reactions and ideas. To end, we listed down the things we learned during our short discussion:

  1. We are not 'just' salty, we are the "salt", really (it is not just an adjective, but a noun - you and me).
  2. We are the salt of the earth (that means we have a global mission to do).
  3. It is always possible for the salt to lose its saltiness (then let us not go easy with our faith if that is the case).
  4. Once the salt loses its saltiness, it is good for nothing (the Bible is clear, there is no middle ground).
  5. Once the salt is good for nothing, then it should be cast out (to be cast out means our salvation is at stake!).

So how do we become what God wants us to be - the salt of the earth? Our group continued and arrived to a list of virtues from what we understood from the Bible:

  1. Mark 9:50 clearly says to “have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another”. First, we need to accept that we are the salt of the earth. Second, It should be purposed in our lives to live the way we should.
  2. As the savor or flavor makes the food delicious, we too are supposed to be a spectacle to the people. Is our influence made them realize we are important?
  3. A grain of salt won't do any good. We need to lump with fellow salt. We should work together, as one.
  4. Salt is a daily need as much as food is a daily need. We are highly needed in the community, on a daily basis.
  5. The physical food that was prepared was by itself already good, but the salt is needed to make it palatable. In the same way, a longing was placed in the people's hearts. They look for the salt to complete their needs.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Matthew 5:13 (KJV)

We can all agree that we are familiar with this verse. But we too can agree that there is still so much to learn from it. What are your thoughts? Please share in the comments section below.
