Treasure Hunting: The Mine of the Undepletable Riches

A certain story was told a long time ago by a great Teacher. The story told us of a man who found a rich treasure lay secretly hidden in a field he’s working. And for great joy, he kept the treasure hidden for a time, until he sold all that he had, earned enough money, and bought that same field and enjoyed the treasure forever.

gold mine

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Matthew 13:44

In His story, Jesus emphasized that the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field.

I could not help but think of a treasure hunting experience out of that classic parable.

Valuable treasure

Jesus saw that people were starting to lose sight of heaven and were absorbed in getting worldly wealth. In my own understanding, Jesus lifted up His voice as if saying, "this should be the treasure that you should desire”. Thus He sought to break the chain that binds between the person and gain seeking.

Job 28:14-18 says, “The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx, or the sapphire. The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.”

In my own opinion, Jesus presents before us the more worthy treasure we all have lost sight of. He takes us to the story, and shows us the treasure there. Where its value is far above gold or silver and the riches of earth's mines combined cannot compare with it.

Treasure hunting

“The Bible is the mine of the undepletable riches of Christ… By many, man's wisdom is thought to be higher than the wisdom of the divine Teacher, and God's lesson book is looked upon as old-fashioned, stale, and uninteresting. But by those who have been vivified by the Holy Spirit it is not so regarded. They see the priceless treasure, and would sell all to buy the field that contains it. Instead of books containing the suppositions of reputedly great authors, they choose the word of Him who is the greatest author and the greatest teacher the world has ever known, who gave His life for us, that through Him we might have everlasting life.” Christ’s Object Lessons p.107

The hunt begins

Wow! I love adventure. And this is the treasure that is found in the Bible. It’s God's great lesson book, His great educator. And it contains the foundation of all true science and where every branch of knowledge may be found by searching.

Searching? Yes, - treasure hunting.
