Shadow Game: Determine The Height Of An Object By The Length Of Its Shadow

Every day is a blessing, whether we like it or not. Everyday, we experience different things. But these things are often left unnoticed and are taken for granted. Because they are not too common and do not show much impact, they just go unthought of.

We have to enjoy life as much as possible. Observing, learning, and discovering things make up one of life’s greatest events. Even in the slight observation, we see God’s knowledge and ingenuity imprinted on every scale. No wonder, He’s called the Author of true knowledge.

Notice this

So if the day is hot and the sun is up straight above our heads, we call that time, noon.

On the other hand, when the sun is set at horizon, ready to open and close the day’s affair, we call it sunset and sundown.

Seventh-day Adventists are so keen on observing sundown every Friday and Saturday. It’s Sabbath, if you happen to ask why.

Game begins

Our civilized world has another way of naming these times of the day. When the sun is straight up, that’s 12:00 noon, when at horizon, that’s 6:00 AM/PM.

High school knowledge teaches us about angles. It would be easy for us then to analyze the time and angle designation shown below.

Approximately, 12 noon makes 90-degree angle with the horizontal while 6 o’clock makes 0-degree; in between is just an addition of 15.

Remember

Our goal is to measure the shadow an object has projected. It is best to observe during a particular time of the day when the shadow is shorter so it would be easy to stretch out our measurement.

Remember, our game is based on the assumption that 12 noon makes a 90-degree angle with the horizontal.

To approximately determine the height of a tall object measuring only the length of its shadow, let’s first review our high school trigonometry:

Let's try

At exactly 1 PM, you passed by a tall tree and you want to know its height. You then measured the shadow it projected to be exactly 3 meters. Since the time is 1 PM, the sun makes 75⁰ with the horizon. Therefore,

The calculation is so easy. This is just one of the many applications of Mathematics.

Why not start doing this for fun and start to appreciate God’s imprinted knowledge?
